Critique Services: Sensitivity Reads

Dear friends,

I decided to start offering sensitivity beta reads to authors interested in receiving an honest critique on the representation of their characters who belong to a minority group identifying as Latinx, South American, Puerto Rican, immigrant, third culture children (growing up in the US of parents from another country). My rates start at $300 for a work between 60-100K. I write middle grade and young adult contemporary and magical realism. I'm a third semester MFA candidate at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Writing for Children and Young Adult program. My middle grade ON THESE MAGIC SHORES received Lee and Low's New Voices Award Honor in 2015, and I'm also the recipient of the 2015 Walter Dean Myers Inaugural Grant.

My critique will focus on character development and authenticity of characters and situations that have to do with less represented groups. If interested, email me at yamile.s.mendez@gmail.com

Pass the voice!

ETA: If you don't think you're ready for a manuscript critique, but have questions about culture/language/appropriateness of subject matter, I can answer your questions for a consulting fee of $50/hour. Due to my limited time (own projects, MFA, motherhood), I can't answer every email. But I'll be happy to be a consultant.

    1. Thank you, Kari! People have been reaching out already. It's been great!

Due to the high level of spam and trolls, I'm moderating comments for a bit.
